The shock and awe caused by the recent disaster in Japan makes all of us realize how quickly life can be turned upside down in a blink.  While there are no earthquakes here, safe on the shores of Singapore, we do face risks which could shake our sense of peace and well-being. 
 
An expat family in Singapore recently lost all their belongings when their home caught fire.  They were, of course, devastated by the loss of their un-insured possessions.  Their worst fears were not yet realized until the landlord and owner of the adjacent cluster home sued them for the substantial fire damage caused to his property.  Although cases like this are rare, no one can predict the future, which is why losses like these can catch us by surprise. 
 
As a Country, Singapore is generally safe.  But remember the government’s slogan “low crime doesn’t mean no crime.” 
 
In recent months, a River Valley condo block suffered a wave of burglaries as workmen gained access and looted unoccupied apartments.  Though bouts of theft are heard of, fortunately, burglary is not the most common cause of home insurance claims.
 
The most common claims are in fact the loss of possessions: the disappearance of a watch from a sun lounger on holiday or a mislaid earring in your home.  While this might not be a revelation, you might be interested to know most insurance policies exclude or limit coverage for just such lost items.  The fact is 7 out of 10 women reading this article have insurance that doesn't cover the loss of their Diamond ring.
 
In addition to lost diamonds, other common claims generally excluded from policies are:

• the loss of a camera, either here in Singapore or while traveling abroad
• the loss of a precious stone from a piece of jewelry
• a missing earring from a pair, as many insurers do not recognize the loss of part of a set
